A burst of machine-gun guitar followed by the banshee-like howl of lead singer Libba Walker kicks off "Propaganda Machine," the opening track of Vova Nova's self-titled 1992 release. It sets the tone for the entire record, which seldom gives listeners a chance to catch their breath. Produced by Paul Ebersold, whose engineering and production credits include Sonia Dada and the Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies, the band delivers an engaging collection of funk rock. Backing Walker is guitarist Glen Butts, bassist Milton Davis and drummer Mark Lanter. Walker sounds like a less edgy Johnette Napalitano as she delivers rap-like vocals over numbers like the staccato beat of "Are You a Cop?" and "Land of the Living." Her lyrics are insightful on the menacing dirge "I'm Home" and the funky "Don't Take Me Home," an amusing tale about the horrors of meeting a significant other's parents. Vova Nova delivers music to move the feet and feed the head.
