Sparks recorded seven albums of his own and played on over 100 other albums. As a session man for Blue Note and Prestige Records, Sparks laid his signature guitar work on many other musician’s albums without ever being in spotlight. It was during this time that Melvin defined the jazz-guitar sound of a generation.
Melvin Sparks is still a much sought-after studio player, both new and old talents seek him out now more than ever. He continues to perform with the greats of this genre such as Leon Spencer Jr., Mike Clark and Idris Mohammed and is now breaking out his legendary guitar wizardry with many younger bands and artists such as Galactic, The Greyboy Allstars, Karl Denson's Tiny Univers, Derek Trucks and Robert Walter's 20th Congress.
Melvin is geared up to show us all what he does better than anyone else. Groove hard and in the pocket. Melvin Sparks has perhaps the most inspiring and soul-energizing guitar chops on this planet or another. He is admired by many performers, and audiences old and young alike, but continues to be a hidden treasure for music fans worldwide. He is Soul-Jazzy and Funky to the core!

Heavy funk from the Spanish scene -- really great little combo with hard-cooking organ from Carlo Coupe, and some wickedly soulful vocals from Mayka Edjole -- a singer who almost stands next to the best current deep funk divas from the US! There's a lean, stripped-down quality to the record we really love -- mostly just tight drums, bass, guitar, and Hammond -- all produced with enough grit in the grooves to give the record a classic funk quality on most numbers. There's a lot less of the too-bright production qualities that sometimes mar other recent work from Spain -- and the Sweet Vandals really seem poised to be their nations emissaries on the international funk circuit! Titles include "I Got You Man", "Charlie Love", "Do It Right", "You're Getting It", "You Wanna Be My Lover", "Come On Now", and "That's The Way I Am"

Jazzy soul and cosmic grooves served up warmly by Afro Elements -- their long awaited full length debut for the Freestyle label! Afro Elements does a pretty sweet job of blending diverse elements for an expansive, but somehow tightly groovy sound -- recalling the funky keyboards groove of prime George Duke, with timeless sound overall -- putting them in the company of modern masters such as Jiva! The playing is really impeccable throughout, with loads Fender Rhodes, bass, live and programmed percussion -- and occasional guest vocalists. Sweet stuff! Titles include "Think" and "Latinspiration" featuring Heidi Vogel, "It Remains To Be Seen", "Ju Ju", "Volcano", "Four Letter Word", "Lift Your Life" feat Tyaire & Benny Diggs, "Volcano" (Raydio mix) feat Jeff Lorber, "Stop You're Killing Me", "Casa Del Ritmo" and more!

Alliance Ethnik are a multi-culteral group from all over Europe and Africa. They started out back in 1994, with the excellent Simple Et Funky produced by no other than Bob Power, the inspiration behind A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Their music is a lot more friendly compared to the rap that was hitting French shop shelves, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and other gangsta rap were dominating. So K-Mel, Gutsy, Crazy B, Médard amd Fast Jay put out some of the funkiest rap in Europe. The lyrics were jokey, but brought some serious subjects, like respecting women, wearing a condom, and being honest rather than jealous. This went down well with the French public, and they did well. Crazy B is their DJ, and has won 7 DMC awards in the 90s alone.
This CD brings together everything Alliance Ethnik, from Simple Et Funky right through to Un Enfant Doit Vivre with the excellent Youssou N'dour. The whole album has nothing new for those of you who have Simple Et Funky and Fat Comeback, but for those who don't know them you're in for a treat. English mixed in with French rap is on the menu here, and should be enjoyed by many hip hop lovers. Vinia Mojica's voice is soulful, and with guests like Rahzel, Common, De La Soul and DJ Pone, you're in for a good listen.

Jeremy Warmsley is a half English, half French West London based singer-songwriter, currently signed to Transgressive Records.
His musical style displays an electronica influenced approach to melodic pop songwriting, first heard on debut single 'I Believe In The Way You Move' (July 2005), and further developed on his 'The Art Of Fiction' LP (October 2006). He toured the UK with Regina Spektor and the Shins that year. After a lengthy wait, a non-album single "The Boat Song/Temptation" appeared in April 2008 (featuring a New Order cover). His new album, "How We Became", co-produced by Markus Dravs (Coldplay/Arcade Fire/Bjork) will be released in the UK in September 2008, followed by a lengthy headline tour.
In 2008 Warmsley along with (Mystery Jets & Adem) contributed the song "Grains of Sand" to the Survival International charity album Songs for Survival.

In a nutshell this is Ocean Colour Scene with beats. Lead singer (and guitarist) Russell Nash has a croaky, raspy voice straight out of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels that vocally and lyrically show his stage roots (a drama school veteran, he was a west end child actor in the likes of Oliver).
Along with DJ, producer and rapper Steve 'Tha Force' Ellington (last seen spinning tunes and cussing Ali G's patois on the comedian's TV show) and musicians Don Bannister, Pete Cherry and Izzi Dunn, Nash has produced a passionate mixture of hip hop, folk and funk that occasionally hits superlative highs on tracks such as the powerful ballad 'Soon To Be' and the recently released and very funky single 'A 100 Million Ways' (which the group re-perform in a semi-classical way at the album's close).
Honed over two years of hard gigging 'The Chancer' is a tight if occasionally self-indulgent record that manages to merge both street and chin stroking Dylan-like culture in a fairly neat trick. Each song tells a narrative while Ellington keeps the flow and the feet moving with forceful hip hop influences (he was once part of the Ronin posse). Worth a punt.

One of the rarest albums on the Groove Merchant label -- and one of the best! Ramon Morris has a sweet tone on the tenor that works very well with the electric piano in his tight little combo -- grooving with a style that's like the best Black Jazz funk records of the time -- mixing together bright notes, funky rhythms, and plenty of great chord changes! Cecil Bridgewater's on trumpet, and the band has a really righteous feel -- with lots of real soul and thoughtful playing mixed into the jazz funk grooves of the record. Massive -- with titles that include "Sweat", "Lord Sideways", "Sweet Sister Funk", and a nice version of "People Make The World Go Round".

Wild Cherry - Wild Cherry (1976)

Rob Parissi (lead vocals & guitar) was raised in the tough, diverse steel mill town of Mingo Junction, Ohio [1]. Parissi graduated from Mingo High School in 1968. Rob formed his band in 1970 in Steubenville, Ohio, one mile north of Mingo Jct. along the Ohio River. The band's name "Wild Cherry" was selected off a box of cough drops while Rob was recuperating from a brief hospital stay. The band played the Ohio Valley region, the West Virginia panhandle, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Wild Cherry eventually gained a record contract with Brown Bag Records. After an unproductive time with Brown Bag and no album to speak of, the band broke up and a disillusioned Parissi left the music scene to become the manager of a local steakhouse. Rob quickly realized that the steak house gig was not going to "cut it - too tough." As his enthusiasm for the music eventually returned, Rob decided to give the business one last shot.
Soon after, Parissi re-formed the band with new musicians. The new lineup had Mark Avsec (keyboards), Bryan Bassett (guitar), Allen Wentz (bass guitar) and Ronald Beitle (drums & percussion). As the quintet began to perform publicly in an era dominated by disco, they were repeatedly asked by listeners to "play that funky music." Parissi was inspired to write a song that captured the "funky music-white boy theme." When the band went into the studio to record it, a friend of the studio engineer heard the song, was blown away by the potential hit, and brought the band to the attention of Epic Records, which then immediately signed the group. Epic suggested recording the song as an A-side instead of as the B-side to a cover version of the Commodores' "I Feel Sanctified," as had originally been planned.
"Play That Funky Music" became a huge hit when released in 1976, peaking at number one on both the Billboard R&B and pop charts. Both the single and Wild Cherry's self-titled debut album went platinum. The band was named Best Pop Group of the Year by Billboard, and received an American Music Award for Top R&B Single of the Year, as well as a pair of Grammy nominations for Best New Vocal Group and Best R&B Performance by a Group or Duo that year, adding to their success.
Wild Cherry's luck ended with their 1977 album, Electrified Funk, which flopped without producing any hits. Their 1978 album I Love My Music, as well as their 1979 albums Only the Wild Survive and Don't Wait Too Long didn't do better, leading to the band's split. Still, four other Wild Cherry songs made a minor impact on the charts: "Baby Don't You Know" (1977; peaked at #43), "Hot To Trot" (1977; peaked at #95), "Hold On" (1977; peaked at #61), and "I Love My Music" (1978; peaked at #69). Although it was never a chart hit, the song "1 2 3 Kind Of Love" had the right feel for the beach music clubs along the North and South Carolina coasts; it continues to be popular there today, and the song is included in the beach music anthology series by Ripete Records.
Parissi later became a disk jockey in Wheeling, West Virginia. One musician who played with the band was guitarist/vocalist Donnie Iris (ex-The Jaggerz), who was with Wild Cherry from the mid-1970s through the band's demise in 1980. Donnie partnered up with keyboardist Mark Avsec to form The Cruisers before going solo. Guitarist Bryan Bassett went on to a hard rocking career in the 90's with Foghat and Molly Hatchet. He continues to tour with Foghat.
Wild Cherry's lone hit was covered by The Real Roxanne in 1988, was sampled by Vanilla Ice in 1990 (for which Parissi was not credited; he later won $500,000 in a copyright infringement lawsuit), and it continues to be a hit in dance clubs to this day.

The Undisputed Truth - 2 first albums

The Undisputed Truth was a 1970s Motown recording act, assembled by record producer Norman Whitfield as a means for being able to experiment with his psychedelic soul production techniques. Joe Harris served as main lead singer, with Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce, formerly of The Delicates, on additional leads and background vocals.
The group's music and unusual costuming (large Afros and white makeup) typified the then-popular trend of "psychedelic soul". A number of their singles became minor hits, and many of them were also songs for Whitfield's main act The Temptations, among them "You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right Here on Earth" and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone". Their single Top 40 hit in the United States was the ominous "Smiling Faces Sometimes", originally recorded by The Temptations, which hit #3 on the US pop charts in 1971.
The Undisputed Truth, along with Rose Royce and Willie Hutch, followed Whitfield during his exodus from Motown to set up Whitfield Records in 1975. At this time, Calvin and Joyce left the group, and Harris was joined by new members Virginia "V" McDonald, Tyrone"Big Ty" Douglas, Tyrone "Lil Ty" Barkley, and Calvin "Dhaak" Stephenson. The group's costuming and style changed as well, becoming even more unusual and Funkadelic-influenced.
However, the group had little success at the new label, and faded into obscurity after two more albums, although they charted in the UK in 1977 (#43) with the disco single "You + Me = Love" from the album Method to the Madness. Lead singer on the single "You + Me = Love" was Taka Boom who is Chaka Khan's younger sister.

Europe's number one Afro Cuban Jazz group 'Snowboy And The Latin
Section' release their 15th album, entitled 'Communication'.
Although continuing to perform many concerts and festivals around the
world - from Australia to Japan, from Ireland to Greece - Snowboy (along
with thousands of other musicians) became very disillusioned with the
severe state of the music industry and took a break from recording.
After four years and with renewed optimism the UK's top Conga player
(Conguero) and his all-star band have delivered an absolutely joyous and
exciting album with power-house world-class performances. They consider
it their best recording in Snowboy's 23 year recording career.
Along with the other seven strong original compositions here, the
highlight of the album is an original composition by the acknowledged
'King Of Latin Music' - Eddie Palmieri. Mr. Palmieri doesn't write for
anyone else but after becoming introduced at Yale University six years
ago by Professor Robert Farris Thompson - one of the world's leading
authorities of Afro-related Music, History and Art - they have become
firm friends, and Eddie wrote a Mambo in Snowboys honour called
'Snowboy's Special'!
Along with that very exciting song, this Afro Cuban Jazz album covers
the Cuban styles of Mambo, Salsa, Palo, Descarga and Mozambique, making
this the bands most versatile album to date.

Little Barrie is a three-piece band from Beeston, Nottinghamshire, England, since relocated to London. The band consists of Barrie Cadogan (guitar and vocals), Lewis Wharton (bass) and Billy Skinner (drums). Before Skinner, Wayne Fulwood was playing drums and singing. On the first single, before Fulwood joined, session drummer Chris Lee is featured. Their music could be described as stripped-down soul-infused blues rock 'n' roll.
Little Barrie released their debut album, We Are Little Barrie, in February 2005. It was recorded over a series of 23 Wednesdays in Edwyn Collins' studio.
Wayne left the band before the recording of their second album. According to Lewis "Yeah, it was a surprise... I didn't think it would ever happen. The constant touring was driving Wayne insane. He was away from home a lot... It got to the point where we were about to go the US to record the new album and it dawned on him that he'd be away again, and that we would be touring it the year after that. So he said he couldn't do it anymore."
Stand your Ground was recorded between New York with Dan The Automator on the producing skills and the help of Russell Simins (of Blues Explosion) on drums and London with Mike "Prince Fatty" Pelanconi as producer and new drummer Billy Skinner.

Hailing from Brighton, The Grits emerge with their own take on raw, rare
and grimy instrumental funk. Their journey began in 2005 with guitarist
Stuart ''Countryboy'' Carter and Nick ''The Organiser'' Harris. Bassist
James and drummer Johnny were recruited soon after, marking the birth of
one seriously slick funk four piece.
Their self titled debut includes a superb cover of The Soul Drifters
'Funky Soul Brother', as well as 'Boom Boom', the sold out 45 released
on Freestyle and its B side 'Jan Jan' - an instant raw funk classic
championed by Radio 2's Mark Lamarr and Radio 6 funkster Craig Charles.
With their roots firmly steeped in classic funk, The Grits add their own
slant with trashy guitars, crunchy drums and deep bass. Add to this
super-modulated Moog, a bag of percussion and their trademark guttural
vocal grunts and you have a live show that never fails to work their
live audiences into a funk frenzy.
On record, The Grits manage to keep the rawness alive, whilst upping the
stakes sonically with modular analogue synths, piano, harmonica and even
a huge metal cabinet played with a stick!

As one of the reigning elder statesmen of jazz, Roy Haynes has his pick of the finest sidemen in the world. His assembled entourage for PRAISE is an ensemble worthy of Haynes' unequaled strengths as a drummer and bandleader. The horn line for ... Full Descriptionthe tracks that feature the entire group include the young titans David Sanchez (tenor), Kenny Garret (alto) and Graham Haynes (flugelhorn/cornet). Surrounding himself with rhythm section-mates Dwayne Burno (bass), David Kikoski (piano) and Daniel Moreno (percussion), Haynes is in full stride in what some would call the twilight of his years. Those that say that, however, would only need to listen to this master's powerful drumming to realize their error.
Opening with Chick Corea's "Mirror Mirror," Haynes directs his charges with a bouncing waltz beat that jabs and twists through the twirling progressions. The Middle Eastern-flavored "After Sunrise" follows with hypnotic chanting that leads into a mid-tempo groove charms the listener like a snake. Standards such as the swinging "Israel" and the pretty ballad "The Touch Of Your Lips" make familiar platforms for Haynes and his younger counterparts to jump into some exceptionally creative interplay. Of special note, the Haynes/Garrett duo on Bird's "My Little Suede Shoes" is stunning, to say the least. Other Standout tracks include the smooth trio groove of McCoy Tyner's "Blues On The Corner" and Haynes' melodic solo spot "Shades Of Senegal."
