Alliance Ethnik are a multi-culteral group from all over Europe and Africa. They started out back in 1994, with the excellent Simple Et Funky produced by no other than Bob Power, the inspiration behind A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Their music is a lot more friendly compared to the rap that was hitting French shop shelves, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill and other gangsta rap were dominating. So K-Mel, Gutsy, Crazy B, Médard amd Fast Jay put out some of the funkiest rap in Europe. The lyrics were jokey, but brought some serious subjects, like respecting women, wearing a condom, and being honest rather than jealous. This went down well with the French public, and they did well. Crazy B is their DJ, and has won 7 DMC awards in the 90s alone.
This CD brings together everything Alliance Ethnik, from Simple Et Funky right through to Un Enfant Doit Vivre with the excellent Youssou N'dour. The whole album has nothing new for those of you who have Simple Et Funky and Fat Comeback, but for those who don't know them you're in for a treat. English mixed in with French rap is on the menu here, and should be enjoyed by many hip hop lovers. Vinia Mojica's voice is soulful, and with guests like Rahzel, Common, De La Soul and DJ Pone, you're in for a good listen.

In a nutshell this is Ocean Colour Scene with beats. Lead singer (and guitarist) Russell Nash has a croaky, raspy voice straight out of Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels that vocally and lyrically show his stage roots (a drama school veteran, he was a west end child actor in the likes of Oliver).
Along with DJ, producer and rapper Steve 'Tha Force' Ellington (last seen spinning tunes and cussing Ali G's patois on the comedian's TV show) and musicians Don Bannister, Pete Cherry and Izzi Dunn, Nash has produced a passionate mixture of hip hop, folk and funk that occasionally hits superlative highs on tracks such as the powerful ballad 'Soon To Be' and the recently released and very funky single 'A 100 Million Ways' (which the group re-perform in a semi-classical way at the album's close).
Honed over two years of hard gigging 'The Chancer' is a tight if occasionally self-indulgent record that manages to merge both street and chin stroking Dylan-like culture in a fairly neat trick. Each song tells a narrative while Ellington keeps the flow and the feet moving with forceful hip hop influences (he was once part of the Ronin posse). Worth a punt.

Ultramen - discography

Ultramen began its activities in Porto Alegre in 1991. At that time it was a trio: Zé Darcy (drums), Julio Porto (guitar) and Pedro Porto (bass). The initial idea was to mix heavy metal music (Sepultura, Slayer, Anthrax, etc) with black music (James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone), and rap vocals (Public Enemy, Beastie Boys). The trio cut a demo with two songs, with Zé doing the vocals. The first lyrics were in English.. Then Tonho, took over as singer, and after that came Malásia (percussion) and Peru (sax). This formation made the first show in the city of Porto Alegre and in the country side. . Also, it was with six members that Ultramen made two official demo tapes. After the release of the demo tapes and the shows, the band started to be considered one of the most important bands in Porto Alegre, calling national attention, being invited to participate in festivals and shows in other states of Brasil. Soon after, there has been another change in the formation: Peru leaves and Marcito joins the band. (percussion). Around this time, other rhythms started to influence the musical mix of the band, like Brasilian music and reggae. In 1997 Ultramen recorded its first CD. This recording, which was totally sponsored by the band, happened to be heard by Dado Villa-Lobos, who decided to contract the band and release the CD under his own label – the Rock it! It came out in 1998 and got the band to be known to the public and the media all over the country, mainly with the song “Vou a mais de 100”, which was played a lot on the radios in Sao Paulo. In Rio Grande do Sul, “Bico de luz” was a hit.. Both songs had vídeo clips. At this time, the band made important shows in Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Brasília. Two people were invited to play as special guests: DJ Anderson (scratch) and Leonardo Boff (keyboards). In 2000 Olelê, the second CD ,comes out. This CD represents an important period for the band. Many songs (like Peleia, Dívida, and Esse é o meu Compromisso) were played on the local radios and the band made dozens of shows throughout their native state - Rio Grande do Sul. This CD led the band to play in universities and schools in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in the beginning of 2001. During this period there was another change in the formation of the band: Julio leaves (guitar) and Alexandre Guri joins the group. (guitar). Guri participated in all the Olelê Shows and recorded the third CD which is called “O incrivel caso da musica que encolheu e outras historias” (The incredible case of the song that shrunk and other stories...). It came out at the end of 2002, after signing with Sum Records. Shortly after the group toured in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The songs “Máquina do tempo” and “De canto e sossegado” became vídeo clips. At the beginning of 2004, the guitar player Alexandre Guri leaves and one of the founders of the band rejoins the band, Julio Porto. In January 2005, Ultramen participated in a big MTV project - Acustico MTV Bandas Gaúchas. The bands participating in this project recorded a CD and DVD, and the hit ‘Dívida' has special participation of Falcão from the band ‘O Rappa'. The latest work of the band, Capa Preta, has been released in the end of 2006. Capa Preta shows that the band continues in the same way of mixing musical styles, with its formula each time more matured

If you asked a hip-hop expert what the main differences between East Coast and West Coast rap were in the late '80s and '90s, you would have likely heard the following generalization: West Coast rappers were about beats and messages, while the East Coast was about rapping technique, flow, and rhyming style. There is some truth to that generalization, but like other generalizations, that East Coast/West Coast scenario was a case of patterns and trends rather than hard rules that could never be bent or broken -- the problem with musical generalizations is that there are usually a lot of exceptions that have to be taken into account. Because they favored a jazzy alternative rap sound and made rhyming technique a high priority, Five Fingers of Funk were usually compared to New York and Philadelphia artists in the '90s. But Pete Miser's group was from Portland, OR, and there isn't the slightest hint of gangsta rap or G-funk on About Time -- this 1998 release brings to mind Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Jungle Brothers, not Snoop Dogg or Warren G. While there are some parallels between About Time and Miser's solo output, the two are not identical. Fingers have the strong Native Tongues influence that Miser's solo recordings are known for, but with a less produced sound and punchy horn arrangements that owe a lot to '70s funk. About Time, you see, is the work of a hip-hop band -- not just a group, but a real band with trumpet, sax, trombone, electric bass, percussion, and real drums (as opposed to simply drum machines). Miser's rapping and DJ Chill's turntable work are surrounded by live instruments, and that separates About Time from most of 1998's hip-hop efforts.
